It is indeed an auspicious moment for Social, Environmental and Developmental Sustainability Research Centre (SEEDS) to hold its first international conference with the theme of ‘Social and Ecological Transformation: Synthesis, Pragmatism and Shifting Paradigm’ on 20th and 21st November 2017 at Danau Golf Club, UKM. I wish to take this opportunity to congratulate the organizing committee especially the chairperson of SEEDS, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abd. Hair Awang and the chairperson of organising committee of 1st SEEDS international conference, Dr. Rosniza Aznie Che Rose, for their diligent and kind effort in organising the event.

In this current era, due to greater awareness of the impact of human footprint on our deteriorating environment, gradual changes of improvement no longer suffice. Thus, social and ecological transformation must be in place towards sustainability. To achieve our objective, we must combine and consolidate all ideas, past practices and create something new yet practical to suit current needs. And finally, creating an approach that is quite different from our current practices, a complete new mindset of approaches that vastly differ from present, this shifting paradigm is needed in all sphere of life.

In view of such importance, the faculty and the university shall provide necessary resources and support to realise this objective. And I wish all the best and success towards our final goal.

Lastly, I wish everyone a fruitful conference.

Thank you.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

As Conference Chairperson, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 1st SEEDS 2017 International Conference. The theme of this inaugural conference is ‘Social and ecological transformation: Synthesis, pragmatism, and shifting paradigm’. This conference is aimed at providing academics, researchers, policy makers, students and wider community a platform upon which to bridge the gap of knowledge, and to spark the genesis of novel ideas in the social sciences.

Your presence here today at this meeting, and the many papers that we have received for the conference is a proof of continuing effort by researchers to come up with concepts and thinking that are creative and innovative. The 1st SEEDS 2017 International Conference, brings together various disciplines in the field of social sciences to providing opportunity and platform for researchers to discuss and examine diverse viewpoints, and to arrive at an understanding and appreciation of each other’s perspectives.

The presenters at this conference will include the representative of the local and international key industry players offering theoretical concepts as well as practical solutions in the advancement of social science research. What we can learn in this discourse would be of immense value in realising our objective of transformation towards achieving high impact research in the social sciences.

I take this opportunity to express my appreciation to the various contributors and participants in this conference in bringing thought-provoking and innovative ideas. The success of this event is due mainly to your strong support. Do enjoy your participation at this conference. We look forward to your participation again at the next SEEDS International Conference.

Thank you and have a wonderful day.
