1. You were given a number of definitions of the term ‘short story’ during the course.

Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of these definitions, and explain why you prefer any one of these more than others.

Analyse and show how any three stories studied on this course fit in with your preferred definition.

2. The term ‘emergent literature’ has been used in the context of many non-native literary texts in English.

Using either one, or a number of texts from any one region, illustrate what you understand to be some of the main features of such emergent literature.

3. Among those you studied in this course, is there a writer you would label as being a ‘feminist’? Discuss and illustrate using specific works by the writer.

4. Compare and contrast any two semi-autobiographical works that you have studied. Discuss and justify your preference for one over the other.

5. Use one of the approaches taught to you, and analyse and discuss any one novel in detail. Make sure that your analysis is consistent with the approach.

6. Which among the following would you argue to be a more relevant and valid approach for examining the works from any one region that you have studied: postcolonialism, feminism, nationalism, humanism and socialism?

Discuss with reference to writers and literary texts.

7. Illustrate, with specific references, how a number of writers have dealt with any one theme.
