ABSTRACT

This study examines the contributions of the Department of Political Science at IIUM in the field of Islamization of Knowledge (IOK). To this aim, the study begins by discussing the model of IOK adopted by IIUM. It then analyses the importance of IOK in Political Science as a discipline. The study surveys course curricula and outlines of undergraduate and postgraduate courses taught in the Department of Political Science, as well as the contributions of the department’s lecturers to IOK. The contents of the various course outlines examined in this study suggest that the Department of Political Science has applied a comprehensive approach in designing curriculum by combining Islamic Revealed Knowledge and modern social science perspectives. Most of the course outlines integrate topics from both Islamic and Western perspectives. However, it is noted that the level of integration of Islamic contents also depends on the nature of the course. Some outlines contain significant IOK content while others contain comparatively less IOK content. The study also found significant contributions by staff members of the department towards IOK through conducting research, developing theories, methodologies and empirical studies. The department staff have published several works related to IOK in the form of books, articles and theses.

CHAPTER ONE

THE FRAMEWORK OF ANALYSIS

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The purpose of this study is to highlight the contributions of the Department of Political Science at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) in its efforts towards

“Islamization of Knowledge” (IOK). For this purpose, the study examines the various dimensions of IOK and how it is relevant to the discipline of Political Science. Besides that, the study examines the various contributions of the Department of Political Science at IIUM towards IOK.

Review of IOK literature reveals that “Islamization of Knowledge” has many perspectives, interpretations, and approaches. However, this study shows that IIUM had adopted its own strategy of IOK which has continuously evolved in the last three decades. Furthermore, the study shows that the Islamization of the Political Science is essential and pertinent both in theoretically and empirically.

Islamization of Knowledge at IIUM has reflected a specific strategy that may be divided into two major phases, (1) theoretical intensive phase and (2) empirical oriented phase. This point will be further elaborated in the literature review and theoretical framework of this study. Besides that, the analysis in this thesis proves that research and curriculum in the Department of Political Science reflect changing trends of IOK at IIUM and that the department has made substantial contribution towards implementing the IOK strategy adopted by IIUM.

Islamization is the core mission and vision of IIUM. The commitment of the institutions toward IOK is reflected from the functions of the university by providing

(14)

2

necessary support both in academic and administrative aspects. The senate of the university is enthusiastic in integrating Islamic norms and values in all the courses, curriculum, proposals and dissertations as well as evaluating the efforts of academic members in research and publications. For the promotion of the academic staff, Islamization of knowledge is considered one of the significant factors (Ssekamanya, Hussien, & Ismail, 2011).

The Department of Political Science was established at IIUM in 1990 as one of the ten Departments in the Kulliyya of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences (IRKHS). IRKHS has two divisions, the Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences. Under the Human Sciences, there are Department of Political Science, Communication, History, Psychology, English and Sociology & Anthropology. All these departments including the Department of Political Science had to guarantee that the courses taught in their department programs will commensurate with the mission, vision and philosophy of IIUM.

The philosophy of IIUM is based on the concept of knowledge that is originated from the first five verses of the Sura Al-Alaq of the Holy Qur’an. Sura al- A’laq (1-5).

These verses are translated as follows:

1. Read! In the Name of your Lord, Who has created (all that exists), 2. Has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood).

3. Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous, 4. Who has taught (the writing) by the pen. 5. Has taught man that which he knew not. (The Noble Quran, English translation).

Based on these verses, tawḥīd is the foundation of knowledge in the University.

This is in line with the vision of the IIUM, which in turn, the Department of Political Science upholds the concept of the unity of knowledge as rooted in the cardinal principle of Islam i.e tawḥīd (The Oneness of Allah, He is the center of every function in the universe). The department emphasizes infusion of Islamic values in Western

(15)

3

methodologies to the discipline and teaching of Politics. “It strives for achieving excellence in research and critical approach to problem-solving from an Islamic perspective” (Aldila Ishak, 2014: 2).

The aims of the Department of Political Science are to produce qualified scholars with a blend of Islamic knowledge and conventional knowledge of political science. In line with the objectives of the Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences, the Department specifically aims to generate Islamic political scientists who can evaluate knowledge originate from conventional Political Science and synthesize conventional and Islamic knowledge, and paradigm this integrated knowledge into the Islamic political knowledge (IRKHS Prospectus, 2013).

Specifically, this study seeks to examine the contributions and achievements of the Department of Political Science at IIUM in the area of Islamization of knowledge.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

1) What are the various theoretical perspectives of Islamization of Knowledge?

2) How does Islamization of knowledge relate to Political Science?

3) How has the Department of Political Science at IIUM contributed to the Islamization of Knowledge?

RESEARCH OBJECTIVES

1) To understand the concepts, theories, methods and objectives of Islamization of knowledge.

2) To examine the relevance and significance of Islamization of knowledge in relation to Political Science as an academic discipline.

(16)

4

3) To highlight the contributions of the Department of Political Science towards the Islamization of knowledge.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study is significant due to the following reasons:

1. Studying Islamization of knowledge will help to further clarify its concepts methods and philosophy for the advancement of its agenda.

2. Finding the relevance of Islamization in the methodological approach of Political Science will strengthen and will work as supplementary value for the Islamization movement in Muslim education.

3. This study hopes to contribute empirically to the policy makers of IIUM and the department for further improvement.

4. The findings will be valuable to other disciplines in the Muslim community 5. The findings of this study will benefit to other researchers who may want

to adopt the IOK approach.

JUSTIFICATION OF THE STUDY

This study is justified due to the following reasons:

1. Not enough research has been done to highlight the actual contributions of IIUM faculty in IOK.

2. There is virtually no dedicated research to examine the condition in which various research efforts at the Department of Political Science have contributed to IOK at IIUM.

3. There is very little analysis to understand the extent of IOK in the course curriculum of the Department.

This research hopes to contribute by filling the gaps these four areas.

5 LITERATURE REVIEW

The scholars of IIUM contributed in the Islamization of knowledge in three different dimensions: theoretical study, methodology and empirical study. The literature review of this study will discuss these aspects.

Review of Literature Related to the Theoretical Field of Islamization

Al-Attas (1993), Hussain, (2009), and Al-Ahsan, (2009) Identified the problems of Western worldview in its theoretical construct. They argued that the Western scientific methodology constructed to the study of social and human sciences is under the secular worldview which is free from religious influence. The intellectual figures in Western society developed their theoretical frameworks which are materialistic and limited to empirical reality. The Western scholars contributed much in the philosophical and methodological development for the advancement of the world. This development supported them to reach the pinnacle of education and research. However, to maintain the ethics of secularism, their theoretical construct and methodology are lack in revealed or divine knowledge.

Hussain (2009) in his article, “Developing an Integrated Research Method”

explains, Western scholars, like Francis Bacon, John Stuart Mill and John Locke and other many other scholars had a negative attitudes and view regarding religion. He described “Locke is one of the few philosophers who ignored the issue of revelation as a source of knowledge demanding that, knowledge acquired by reasoning is more certain then knowledge acquired through revelation. Revelation is the only probable knowledge and ungrounded metaphysics” (5).

Abdullah Al- Ahsan (2009) argued, one notable issue of social science in our perspective, is the comprehension of religious belief. In this situation, one must recall

(18)

6

that during the Renaissance period, most European thoughts of social control rose in response to the religious supremacy of their society. Therefore, one would discover profound and serious response to religion among numerous European intellectuals.

Therefore, Berghout (2007) call for creating Islamic worldview in the scientific study. He defines the Islamic worldview as the joint vision of Ummatic existence through which Muslims decipher and give answers to the vital questions regarding the Allah s.w.t, Prophethood, the presence of the seen and the unseen universe, the worldly life and Hereafter, humanity, vicegerency, society, and civilization, The premier objectives of the vision originated from the Holy Qur’an through ijtiḥad (independent judgment) for the purpose of guiding humanity to enlighten all pursuits of life on the world as a khalīfah (God’s vicegerents). In this way, the human being has been delegated with the responsibility of ibādah (worship), i’mar commanding for good and da’wa, calling people to Islam. However, the problems of studying Islamic worldview are that, Muslim scholars have not specifically focused on the historical advancement and theoretical paradigms. The major works concentrated predominantly on the facts and topics generally discussed in the worldview studies Berghout, A. (2007).

Berghout (2007) exerted to explain some basic concepts related to the framework of Islamic worldview which will work as tools in the construction of theoretical framework. For instance, the concept of seen and unseen world which works as the means of formulating the integrated structure of knowledge. Besides that, the concept of vicegerency which works as the balanced structure of civilization and the concept of trial which replicates the spirit of life and the significance of the Hereafter in a Muslim’s faiths and vision.

Jamal Farooqui (2009) Defines knowledge in Islamic perspective. He explains there are three levels of knowledge in the ascending scale of certitude (1) knowledge

(19)

7

by inference (ilm al-yaqīn), (2) knowledge by perception (ayn al-yaqīn) and (3) knowledge by intuition (haqq al-yaqīn). He argues that knowledge is a broad and

integrated concept in Islam which covers the whole range of information that replicates true nature of an object and offers an understanding of its operation in the world. It includes micro and macro understanding and exposes the metaphysical nature of the object. This unified and holistic information supports us in the advancement of our actions and operations in our daily life. The knowledge in Islam incorporates a clear understanding between good and bad, right and wrong, the physical reality and transcendental reality.

To create knowledge according to an Islamic perspective, Farouqi (2009) outlines that Islam shows a complete “system of unity: of creator, creation, knowledge and human life” (155). The entire universe is a combined whole where all the creatures visible and invisible, living and non-living, human and non-human, are connected with each other in a significant way. “They function as parts of the whole in harmony with each other according to the law of the nature of cosmic order” (155).

Review of Literature Related to the Methodology of Islamization

The academics of IIUM has worked in different methodological dimensions of Islamization of knowledge. It was centered into three different ways, firstly some scholars exerted to explain the method of Sayyed Naquib Al-Attas, which is called the tasawuf (Sufi) approach. The second type of discussion was the method of Ismail Al-

Faruqui and the scholars of IIIT and the third type of discussion was to offer new a framework of methodology in the process of Islamization (Ragab, 2009; Hussain 2009).

Rosnani Hasim & Imron Rossidy (2009), Yusof Hussain (2009) comparatively discussed the concept and methods of Al-Attas and Al-Faruqi. Al-Attas defines

(20)

8

Islamization of knowledge is intellectual response to secularization, on the other hand, Al-Faruqui, said the rationality of Islamization of knowledge is the malaise of the Ummah, the product of dualistic education system and the inability of the traditional Islamic methodology to be more relevant to the current times.

Hussain (2009) and Moten (2009) however prescribed the formulation of the

“Integrated Research Methodology” in the study of social sciences. They understood the necessity of formulating the new Islamic methodology by the combination of Islamic traditional methods and contemporary Western modern methods which they termed as the “Integrated Research Method.” In this method, they prescribed to overcome the limits of traditional Islamic method and deduct the problems of the Western modern method which is contradictory to Islamic teachings. This is because the two methods are suffering from insufficiencies which make them inappropriate to explore entire or comprehensive reality.

Review of Literature Related to the Empirical Study of Islamization

The scholars of IIUM conducted case studies in the teaching method and curriculum in different departments at IIUM. The study will discuss these aspects.

Islamization at the Department of English

The thesis written by Khairiah Uthman (2005) who studied “Teachers conception on Islamization of knowledge and its relation to the teaching English.” This thesis is an exploratory case study to examine the teacher’s conception and practice of Islamization of knowledge in the teaching of English language. It also examines what extent the Islamization of knowledge has imparted in the teaching-learning process. The result of the study identified that majority of the teachers were still unaware what Islamization

(21)

9

of knowledge refers to. However, all the teachers responded that teaching with Islamic perspective is crucial. This study revealed the problems that the teachers had confronted in teaching English with Islamic perspective for the scarcity of textbooks, materials, curriculum based on Islamic philosophy.

Islamization at the Department of Economics

Haneef & Amin, (1997) conducted a survey on the Department of Economics at IIUM form (1983-94) in the bachelor level which published titling “Conceptual and Practical Dimensions of Islamization of Knowledge: A Case Study of the Economics program at the IIUM” on the American Journal of Islamic Social Sciences. However, their study revealed that the Department of Economics were confronted with the numerous challenges in implementing the agenda of Islamization of knowledge, there was scarcity in producing of textbooks, curriculum, and materials on the basis of Islamic perspective.

Furthermore, there are significant crises in recruiting expert teachers who can efficiently deal with both Islamic and Western knowledge perspectives. Another problem the study identified the partial understanding of the Islamization agenda offered by Ismail Al-Faruqi.

Islamization at the Institute of Education

Firman Mawlana (2014) conducted a study regarding curriculum structure in Education. He examins the Islamic content that is offered either as core courses, elective courses or specialized courses. In INSTED (Institute of Education) for example, Islamic content is offered as a core course in every program with 3 credit hours such as Advanced History and Philosophy of Islamic Education. In the Arabic program, the Islamic content is also offered in the elective course with 6 credit hours. 3 credit hours

(22)

10

is dedicated to a course named Malay-Islamic literature and another 3 credit hours is dedicated to “Islamic Culture and Civilization.”

In the “Educational Administrative” program, besides the core courses, the Islamic content is offered in specialized courses with 3 credit hours namely, “Islamic Perspective in Administration and Human Relations”. In the Social Foundation program, the Islamic content is offered in specialized courses with a total of 9 credit hours namely “History of Muslim Education”, “Advance Social Foundation of Islamic Education” and “Islamic Critical Pedagogy”. In teaching thinking program the Islamic content is offered through a specialized course with 3 credit hours namely, Islamic Foundation of Critical and Creative Thinking.” Meanwhile, in Teaching of Islamic Education program beside core courses, the Islamic content is offered through specialized and elective courses, Mawlana (2014).

In the Ph.D. programs, the Islamic content is also offered as core courses in all INSTED programs namely, “Issues in Islamization of Education”, Educational Psychology”, Educational Administration” ,“Curriculum and Instruction”, Social Foundation” and Instructional Technology”. Each is conducted in a 3 credit hour course. In addition, there is an elective which acts supportive for “Social Foundation program namely. “Islamic Educational Thought”. But there is no credit for other programs in the elective or specialized courses (Mawlana, 2014).

Islamization at the Department of Psychology

Likewise, in Psychology, the objective of the program adheres to the general vision and mission of the university and aim to provide students with knowledge of interpersonal skills and Islamic values. in the Psychology Department, the Islamic content is offered in core courses whether in Counselling and Critical Psychology” program or in the

(23)

11

Industrial and Organizational Psychology” program. The course is titled as” Issues in Islamization of Knowledge (Psychology). Each program offers Islamic content with 3 credit hours but there is not credit hour distributed in specialized or elective courses.

And this is a challenge for the lecturers to infuse Islamic content into the courses, (Mawlana, 2014).

Islamization in Sociology and Anthropology

Mawlana, (2014) explains the conditions of Islamization in the Sociology and Anthropology Department.
